Italian Tennis Pro Camila Giorgi has silently stepped away from the professional circuit, as her name appeared on the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s (ITIA) retired players list. This announcement came as a surprise, especially since Giorgi had last competed at the Miami Open and had not entered Roland Garros.
Ranked at the time as No. 116 in the WTA rankings, Giorgi’s decision not to participate in Roland Garros raised eyebrows among tennis enthusiasts. Despite this unexpected turn of events, she has not addressed her retirement publicly on social media or with the press.
Giorgi’s recent performance at the Miami Open showcased her competitive spirit, where she secured two victories against top-ranked players, including a notable match against world No. 1 Iga Swiatek. Throughout the year 2024, she participated in five events, achieving a record of 3-5.
By officially declaring her retirement, Giorgi commits to undergo out-of-competition testing for a minimum of six months, should she reconsider her decision in the future.
Hailing from Macerata, Italy, Giorgi has had a successful career, clinching four WTA Tour titles. Her journey to success began in 2015 when she claimed her first trophy at Rosmalen on grass courts. One of her standout achievements was triumphing over Karolina Pliskova to win the 2021 Montreal tournament, which was a 1000-level event.
While Giorgi’s Grand Slam performances may not have led to championship titles, she notably reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 2018. Additionally, she made appearances in the round of 16 at the US Open in 2013 and Roland Garros in 2022, along with five third-round exits at the Australian Open.
