World number one Iga Swiatek once again triumphed over Aryna Sabalenka, winning in straight sets to claim the Italian Open title.
Earlier this month, Swiatek edged out Sabalenka in a thrilling Madrid Open final. This time, the 22-year-old displayed dominant form, securing a 6-2, 6-3 victory on Saturday for her 21st career title.
“After Madrid, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” Swiatek commented. “I’m really happy that I was able to play consistently during the clay season. The final tournament is in front of us. I always enjoy playing here.”
Swiatek humorously mentioned she would celebrate with tiramisu, noting to the crowd her disappointment that there was none in the trophy.
This victory marks Swiatek’s third Italian Open title in four years, and she heads to the French Open as the defending champion, having not dropped a set in this year’s tournament. The French Open kicks off on May 26 in Paris.
In the final, Swiatek displayed resilience by saving seven break points and committed only eight unforced errors, underscoring her impressive performance.
After the match, Sabalenka congratulated Swiatek, saying: “Congrats on an incredible two weeks in Rome. I hope we make it to the final at Roland Garros and I’m going to beat you there! Just kidding but I want to do better than today. I love this tournament and hopefully I am going to come back stronger next year.”
