Iga Swiatek secured her place in the French Open final with a commanding win over Coco Gauff, reinforcing her quest for a third consecutive Roland Garros title, and yet another grand slam. The World No. 1 will face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in Saturday’s championship match.
Swiatek Maintains Winning Streak Against Gauff
Swiatek, 23, broke Gauff’s serve in the opening game and, despite a brief loss of serve in the second set, maintained control to win 6-2, 6-4. Gauff, the third seed and current US Open champion, has struggled against Swiatek, losing 11 out of their 12 encounters.
Reflecting on her victory, Swiatek said, “It was intense, especially in the second set, but I’m happy. I stuck with my tactics, didn’t overthink things, and just went for it.”
Gauff’s Struggles Continue
Despite a confident approach leading into the match, Gauff appeared nervous from the outset. Her attempts to dominate with her forehand led to numerous errors, with 18 unforced mistakes in the first set alone. Swiatek needed just two winners to take the set, capitalizing on Gauff’s shaky performance.
After a brief pause to regroup, Gauff found some momentum in the second set, managing to break Swiatek’s serve and leading 3-1. However, she was unable to sustain this advantage. A heated dispute over a line call seemed to galvanize Gauff momentarily, but Swiatek’s consistency ultimately prevailed.
Paolini Reaches Her First Major Final
Jasmine Paolini, seeded 12th, earned her spot in the final by defeating Russia’s Mirra Andreeva, a 17-year-old who was making her own mark at Roland Garros. Paolini’s 6-3, 6-1 victory showcased her powerful forehand and strategic play, building on a season of significant achievements, including her first WTA 1,000 title in Dubai.
Reflecting on her journey, Paolini remarked, “I learned a bit later than other players maybe, but to dream is the most important thing in sport and life. I’m happy I could dream this moment.”
Can Paolini Challenge Swiatek?
As Swiatek aims to join Monica Seles and Justine Henin as the only women to secure three consecutive French Open titles in the Open era, the focus shifts to whether Paolini can halt her momentum. Swiatek has been in formidable form, recovering from a tough second-round match to dominate subsequent rounds, including a 40-minute win against Anastasia Potapova and a straightforward victory over 2019 finalist Marketa Vondrousova.
Paolini’s impressive run at Roland Garros, including a win over third seed Elena Rybakina, positions her as a formidable opponent. However, facing Swiatek in the final will be her toughest challenge yet.
