Zheng Qinwen secured Olympic gold for China in the women’s singles, defeating Donna Vekic in straight sets on Court Philippe Chatrier at Roland Garros. Zheng, who was runner-up in the Australian Open earlier this year, claimed a decisive 6-2, 6-3 victory.

The 21-year-old started strong, quickly establishing a 3-0 lead in the first set against Croatian world number 21 Vekic. She converted her first set point on Vekic’s serve, showcasing her dominance.

The second set proved to be more competitive. However, Zheng, ranked seventh in the world, managed to break Vekic in the crucial eighth game. She then served out the match to clinch the gold medal.

Donna Vekic, 28, reached the gold medal match shortly after a near miss at Wimbledon, where she lost a semi-final thriller to Jasmine Paolini. Despite her efforts, she couldn’t overcome Zheng’s formidable performance in Paris.
